About the Exhibition
The smallest inhabitants of the natural world are rarely seen in all their complexity. In Giants of Nature, Brazilian photographer Anderson Nielsen reveals an invisible universe through extraordinary macro photographs, transforming insects and other tiny organisms into monumental subjects of remarkable beauty and precision. Enlarged far beyond their natural scale, these images expose intricate textures, structures and patterns that normally escape the human eye.
Conceived specifically for the José Malhoa Museum, the exhibition establishes a dialogue between contemporary photography and the museum’s permanent collection. The selection of species has been carefully curated to create visual and conceptual connections with the naturalistic paintings of José Malhoa and his contemporaries, inviting visitors to discover the insects, flora and biodiversity that inhabit, often unnoticed, the landscapes and environments represented in the collection.
By bringing together two distinct ways of observing nature, separated by more than a century, Giants of Nature demonstrates how photography continues to expand our understanding of the world. While nineteenth-century painters interpreted nature through observation and artistic sensibility, macro photography allows us to explore dimensions that remain invisible to the naked eye. Presented as part of the celebrations marking the 200th Anniversary of Photography, the exhibition highlights photography not only as an artistic medium but also as a powerful tool for discovery, scientific observation and environmental awareness.

About the Artist
Anderson Nielsen is a Brazilian photographer specialising in macro nature photography. His work explores the hidden beauty of biodiversity, revealing details that are imperceptible without photographic magnification and bringing together art, science and visual storytelling.
Throughout his career, Nielsen has dedicated himself to documenting insects and other small organisms with exceptional technical precision, transforming creatures only a few centimetres in size into striking portraits of extraordinary visual impact. His photographs encourage a renewed appreciation for the complexity of the natural world while promoting biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness.
