Integrada no programa oficial do F/262 – Festival Internacional de Fotografia e nas comemorações dos 200 Anos da Fotografia, a exposição Florais e Fragmentos, de Filipe Duarte Santos, propõe uma reflexão visual sobre a relação entre natureza, observação e transformação.
Através de um conjunto de imagens centradas em elementos botânicos, paisagens e pequenos detalhes do mundo natural, o autor convida o visitante a desacelerar o olhar e a descobrir formas de beleza frequentemente ignoradas no quotidiano. As fotografias exploram a interação entre luz, matéria, tempo e crescimento, revelando a complexidade silenciosa dos ecossistemas que nos rodeiam.
Entre a contemplação poética e a observação atenta da natureza, Floras e Fragmentos apresenta-se como um percurso visual onde cada imagem funciona como um fragmento de um território vivo e em constante mudança. Folhas, flores, reflexos e texturas tornam-se pontos de partida para uma reflexão sobre biodiversidade, equilíbrio ecológico e a importância da preservação ambiental.
Apresentada no Atelier Museu António Duarte, a exposição integra o eixo curatorial do F/262 dedicado à relação entre território, memória, paisagem e sustentabilidade, reforçando o papel da fotografia como ferramenta de observação, conhecimento e ligação ao mundo natural.

On the left side, the exhibition title, Floras e Fragmentos, appears in large bold black letters occupying much of the upper section of the poster. To the right is the name of the author, Filipe Duarte Santos.
At the centre is a colour photograph depicting the surface of a pond viewed from above. Dark water forms the background, almost black in some areas, creating strong contrast with dozens of floating water lily leaves. The leaves vary in size and shape, most circular with a small opening at one edge. Their colours range from bright green to olive green, with some showing patches of brown, yellow, and reddish tones that suggest different stages of growth and decay.

Subtle reflections and shadows move across the pond’s surface, while stems and aquatic plants emerge discreetly between the leaves. The composition has no visible horizon or surrounding landscape, focusing entirely on the interplay between water, vegetation, light, and form.

About the Author
Filipe Duarte Santos is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and Honorary Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon. He is one of Portugal’s most respected scientists and a leading international voice on climate change, sustainability, and environmental policy.
He graduated in Geophysical Sciences from the University of Lisbon in 1963 and earned a PhD in Nuclear Physics from the University of London in 1968. Throughout his academic career, he has conducted research in nuclear physics, astrophysics, environmental sciences, sustainability, and climate change, publishing more than 160 scientific papers and numerous books.
From 2009 to 2024, he directed the Doctoral Programme on Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies, a joint initiative of the University of Lisbon and NOVA University Lisbon. Since 2017, he has served as President of Portugal’s National Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development.
Alongside his scientific work, Filipe Duarte Santos has maintained a long-standing relationship with photography and visual observation. In Floras e Fragmentos, he turns his attention to the natural world through a photographic language shaped by decades of studying environmental systems and ecological change. The exhibition brings together a contemplative selection of images that reveal the beauty, complexity, and fragility of nature, inviting viewers to look more closely at the landscapes and living forms that surround us.
His most recent book is Time, Progress, Growth and Technology: How Humans and the Earth are Responding (Springer, 2021).
