Marking 200 years of photography, Luz Permanente / Permanent Light explores the evolution of the photographic image from its earliest beginnings to the defining visual moments of the modern world.
Presented as part of the F/262 Festival Internacional de Fotografia and developed in collaboration with the Instituto Português de Fotografia (IPF), the exhibition combines historically significant photographs with an extensive presentation of cameras, lenses, photographic equipment and archival objects tracing the technological and cultural evolution of photography across two centuries.
The exhibition includes works connected to figures such as Nicéphore Niépce, William Henry Fox Talbot, Louis Daguerre, Nadar, Julia Margaret Cameron, Eadweard Muybridge, Alfred Stieglitz, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, Robert Capa, Philippe Halsman, Yousuf Karsh, Alberto Korda, Malcolm Browne, Neil Armstrong and many others whose images transformed photography into one of the defining visual languages of modern society.
Alongside the photographs, visitors encounter a curated selection of historic cameras and photographic technologies, revealing how image-making evolved from early experimental processes to portable reportage cameras, scientific imaging systems and the beginning of the digital era.
Through portraiture, documentary photography, war photography, scientific experimentation, social commentary and visual innovation, Luz Permanente / Permanent Light reflects on photography not only as a tool of representation, but as one of the most influential inventions in modern history.
Rather than presenting a complete historical archive, the exhibition proposes a curated journey through key moments, images, and technologies that have shaped how humanity records memory, understands reality, and sees the world.

The poster is vertically oriented with a light grey background and bold black typography.
At the top left appears the circular orange and black logo of the F/262 – Festival Internacional de Fotografia. Beside it is the logo of the Europe for Festivals initiative. On the upper right, large black text reads “Comemoração 200 Anos Fotografia,” marking the bicentenary celebration of photography.
Dominating the center of the poster, in very large bold black letters, is the exhibition title: “LUZ PERMANENTE” followed underneath by the English translation “PERMANENT LIGHT.”
Below the title, at the center of the composition, appears a photographic object presented against the neutral background. The object resembles an early photographic metal plate or daguerreotype, rectangular in shape with softened corners and a reflective silver-grey surface.
The surface appears worn, oxidized and marked by age. Within the reflective plate, faint traces of an outdoor scene gradually emerge. Shapes resembling buildings, sky and landscape appear softly through the metallic surface, almost dissolving into abstraction.
On either side of the plate are photographic color calibration rulers used in conservation and archival imaging. The ruler on the left is vertical and longer, containing multiple color squares and measurement markings. The ruler on the right is shorter, also vertical, with colored squares and grayscale references.
Along the right edge of the poster, vertical black text reads “+INFO: FESTIVAL262.COM”.
At the bottom left, bold black text announces the exhibition dates: “13.06.2026 — 20.09.2026.” Beneath this appears the venue information: “Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino” and “Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia.” Additional text notes the official opening date of 13 June.

A placa retangular apresenta cantos suavizados e uma superfície prateada acinzentada marcada pelo envelhecimento, oxidação e deterioração material. Dentro da superfície refletora surgem vestígios subtis de uma paisagem exterior. Formas que recordam telhados, edifícios e céu aparecem suavemente através da textura metálica, aproximando-se quase da abstração.
De cada lado da placa encontram-se réguas de calibração fotográfica utilizadas em conservação museológica e arquivo de imagem. A régua da esquerda é mais longa e apresenta múltiplas referências cromáticas e marcas de medição. A régua da direita é mais curta e inclui referências de cor e escala de cinzentos utilizadas em documentação e preservação.
Ao longo da margem direita do cartaz surge texto vertical com a indicação “+INFO: FESTIVAL262.COM”.

the Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia (CEF)
Luz Permanente / Permanent Light inaugurates the new Centro de Experimentação da Fotografia (CEF), a space dedicated to photography, visual culture, preservation, education and artistic experimentation within the F/262 Festival Internacional de Fotografia.
Developed in collaboration with the Junta de Freguesia da Foz do Arelho and created within the Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino, the CEF aims to establish an ongoing dialogue between historical photographic processes, contemporary image-making and public cultural engagement.
Located in the historic Casa do Arco in the center of Foz do Arelho, the Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino preserves the legacy of writer, linguist, educator and chronicler Jaime Jorge Umbelino (1916–2007), who maintained a deep connection to the village throughout his life. Today, the space serves the community through exhibitions, artistic residencies, cultural programming and educational initiatives.
With its historic architecture and cultural significance, the Casa Museu Jaime Umbelino becomes the home of the CEF, creating a new platform for photography and visual storytelling within the region.
