Why Zé?
Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (Lisboa, 1846–1905) was one of Portugal’s most influential and versatile artists — a caricaturist, illustrator, ceramicist, and social commentator. Born into a family of artists, he studied at the Academia de Belas Artes and later led the Fábrica de Faianças das Caldas da Rainha, where he revolutionized ceramic art and gave lasting visual form to satire, humor, and resistance.
Among his many contributions, Bordalo Pinheiro created Zé Povinho in 1875 — a cartoon character that would come to symbolize the Portuguese working class. Irreverent, sharp-witted, and unafraid to mock authority, Zé Povinho became an unofficial voice of the people. His iconic gesture, the manguito, was his way of saying “Toma!” — a humorous but pointed protest against power and hypocrisy.
Caldas da Rainha, where Zé was brought to life in ceramic form, remains a vital part of his legacy — and of ours.

At F/262, we chose Zé as the face of the festival because he captures the two essential truths of creative life: joy and struggle.

He’s a tribute to what it means to be an artist today — determined, expressive, and often caught between inspiration and exhaustion. Zé is our reminder that rebellion can come with a smile or a scowl, but always with purpose.
