SUMMARY:ANA BAIÃO — CANTE
DESCRIPTION:Cante presents a decade-long photographic journey into one of Portugal’s most treasured cultural traditions. Since 2015\, photojournalist Ana Baião has documented the people\, rituals and landscapes that keep the Cante Alentejano alive\, creating one of the most extensive photographic records ever produced on this unique form of collective singing. \nRecognised by UNESCO in 2014 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity\, Cante Alentejano is performed in chorus\, without musical instruments\, and has its roots in the rural communities of Portugal’s Alentejo region. More than a musical tradition\, it is an expression of identity\, memory and community\, passed from generation to generation. \nPhotographed across the Alentejo and the Lisbon metropolitan area\, Baião’s images reveal rehearsals\, religious celebrations\, village festivals and everyday encounters. Her work goes beyond documentary photography\, offering an intimate portrait of the women and men whose voices continue to preserve this living heritage. \nThrough powerful black and white photographs\, Cante invites visitors to experience the dignity\, resilience and humanity of a culture where singing is inseparable from the land\, from memory and from a profound sense of belonging.

SUMMARY:ESTIAGEM — JOÃO MARIANO
DESCRIPTION:As part of the F/262 – International Photography Festival\, ESTIAGEM (Drought) by Portuguese photographer João Mariano explores one of the defining environmental challenges of our time: water scarcity and the growing impact of climate change. \nDeveloped between 2022 and 2024\, the project documents the dramatic decline of the Bravura Reservoir in southern Portugal. As the water receded\, landscapes\, agricultural structures and traces of past human activity emerged from beneath the surface\, revealing a territory transformed by prolonged drought. More than a documentary record\, ESTIAGEM is a powerful visual narrative where the beauty of the landscape coexists with the unsettling reality of environmental change. \nFor more than two decades\, João Mariano has built a body of work deeply connected to water\, the sea and the communities shaped by it. Projects such as Warriors of the Sea\, Harvesters of the Alvor Lagoon\, Coast of the Sea and Between the Waters have established his distinctive photographic language\, combining documentary practice\, artistic vision and an enduring commitment to place. \nPresented within the inaugural edition of F/262\, ESTIAGEM resonates directly with the festival’s curatorial theme\, Water\, exploring its environmental\, cultural and social significance. The exhibition invites audiences to reflect on climate change\, the sustainable management of natural resources and our collective responsibility towards one of the planet’s most precious elements. \nComprising 20 large-format Fine Art photographs\, the exhibition transforms the gallery into a space for contemplation and dialogue\, where photography becomes simultaneously a work of art\, a historical document and a call for environmental awareness.

SUMMARY:JORGE BACELAR — RURALIDADES
DESCRIPTION:As part of the F/262 – International Photography Festival\, Ruralidades by Portuguese photographer Jorge Bacelar presents a visual exploration of Portugal’s rural landscapes\, traditions and communities\, celebrating the people whose lives continue to shape the country’s cultural identity. \nRather than being confined to a single venue\, Ruralidades unfolds across four exhibition spaces in three different communities within the municipality of Caldas da Rainha. This distributed exhibition transforms the territory itself into part of the curatorial experience\, inviting visitors to travel between locations and discover complementary narratives that reveal different perspectives on rural life\, memory and belonging. \nThrough intimate portraits\, carefully observed everyday scenes and a deeply human documentary approach\, Jorge Bacelar captures the resilience\, dignity and continuity of rural communities. His photographs celebrate traditions while reflecting on the social and cultural transformations that continue to shape the Portuguese countryside. \nPresented as part of the inaugural edition of F/262\, Ruralidades reflects the festival’s commitment to connecting photography with territory\, community and cultural heritage. By extending beyond the traditional gallery space\, the exhibition encourages visitors to experience the municipality itself as an open-air cultural route\, where each venue contributes to a broader narrative about identity\, landscape and the relationship between people and place. \n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION VENUES\nRuralidades is presented simultaneously across four venues located in three different communities of Caldas da Rainha: \n\nNadadouro Parish Council (Nadadouro)\nHenrique Nunes da Costa Library (Fanadia)\nFanadia Ethnographic Museum (Fanadia)\nEspaço Turismo Exhibition Gallery (Nossa Senhora do Pópulo\, Caldas da Rainha)\n\nTogether\, these venues create a unique photographic trail\, inviting audiences to experience the exhibition as a journey through the municipality while discovering the richness of its rural heritage.
